An explosion of awe, energy, and inspiration...

Following the success of David Wilson’s Cabaret in 2024, Plug & Play Productions were invited to collaborate once again with David Wilson and We Are Playgrounds for the closing production of the 2025 Playgrounds InMotion Festival at the Barbican. David Wilson’s Closet: Re-Hung was staged in the Barbican Concert Hall in October 2025, bringing an unapologetically queer, maximalist work to one of the UK’s most significant cultural institutions.

Plug & Play Productions delivered the full production design and technical realisation of the piece, working closely with David Wilson, who provided the visual content for the work. Our scope included building the complete QLab show file, producing all stage management documentation and call scripts, integrating the production with the Barbican’s lighting and sound systems, and overseeing the full installation into the Concert Hall. We also called the performance on the night, ensuring a seamless translation from concept to live execution.

Founder and Director Oliver Gregory, ankle-deep in confetti after producing an unforgettable spectacle at the Barbican.

Bringing Closet: Re-Hung to life at this scale was a precise and joyful undertaking. The work demanded close collaboration, technical rigour, and the ability to hold space for chaos without losing control. Standing ankle-deep in confetti at the end of the night, it was clear that this was a production built on trust, shared ambition, and a willingness to push form and expectation.

At a time when the arts are under pressure and conversations around identity, inclusivity, and creative freedom feel increasingly contested, staging unapologetically queer work within a national institution feels both rare and vital. Closet: Re-Hung stands as a reminder that visibility itself can be an act of celebration, and that these spaces must continue to champion bold, boundary-pushing voices who reimagine what performance can be.
